Five Weeks in a Balloon Overview

"The chiefs are armed with muskets," said he, "and our balloon is too easy a mark for them." "Would a hole make us fall?" asked Joe. "Not immediately; but the hole would soon become a vast rent, through which all our gas would escape." "Then let us keep at a respectful distance. What can they think of us? I'm sure they want to worship us!" "We will let ourselves be worshipped," answered the doctor, "but from afar..." 13.5013.5013.50 First published in France in 1863, this is the first of Jules Verne's novels of imaginative adventures. Much more down to earth-figuratively, if not literally-than his later works, his heroes here encounter no lost civilizations, no anachronistic dinosaurs, and no extraordinary perils beyond that which actual explorers of the era might have met on a balloon voyage across the Dark Continent. An inspiration to generations of writers and readers, Verne's fiction remains compelling and thoroughly enjoyable today. French author JULES GABRIEL VERNE (1828-1905) is considered the father of modern science fiction. Among his many groundbreaking books are Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), From the Earth to the Moon (1865), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872).

Extravagant Wedding Symbolisms

Butterflies, Doves or Balloons

Butterflies, Doves or Balloons

Butterflies, Doves or Balloons

Butterflies, Doves or Balloons

White doves are chosen as the color white signifies purity in the same way does the
relationship of the newly married couple. The two doves also signify the couple being released to start a new journey together. Equally important in the symbolism of the doves is their representation of the couple in that whatever happens in the couple's lives, they will always try to seek the comfort of their home together. This is where they know that they will find love.

Many people raise doves for this purpose. The doves are like pigeons and return home after they are released from their cages. For many ceremonies, only two doves are released but sometimes the couple will request others as well, which tends to give meaning to the families supporting the newly married couple.

Whether choosing two doves or a flock of doves, you will also have the choice of release cages for the two main doves. The cages are quite beautiful and worthy of a wedding ceremony and you may choose to keep the pair in one cage or each one in a different cage, then releasing them to unite in the sky as you have united a few minutes earlier in the church.

Words of Caution when Ordering Dove Releases:

check with the city and state as it relates to the releasing of live birds

The birds must be bred to return home or they will die in the wild

the birds must be of a breed that has homing instincts so it is important to order your doves from reputable breeders

Releasing Butterflies

Releasing butterflies too has become an alternative to the more traditional wedding throws. In some instances, the couple releases a host of butterflies themselves or in other cases, the couple allows guests to release the butterflies individually. Indian folklore says that you can whisper a secret wish to the butterfly before its release and your wish will come true!

The butterflies are normally released from fancily decorated cages, boxes or baskets. A pretty white wicker basket covered in veil material tied with a white ribbon makes a lovely display when the bride and groom untie the ribbon and release their butterflies. Once all of them are released into the air, they make a truly spectacular sight with their wistful, floating wings and their magnificent colors all in a sea of beauty.

Words of Caution when Ordering Butterfly Releases:

do not release the butterflies from envelopes as the inside of the envelopes damage the butterfly

in the fall and winter months, temperatures may be too cold for the butterflies and you are only killing them

use companies that have been in business for some time and who actually raise the butterflies

make sure the company with whom you finally place your order provides adequate information up front about the delivery, storage and release of your butterflies

check with your state of residence as some states do not permit the release of butterflies

Releasing Balloons

Balloons of different colors and sizes and shapes are a beautiful sight when released together into the air. And there are several ways that the wedding balloons may be released. A huge bag of air-filled balloons may be opened and all the balloons are let out to rise to the top of the building or ceiling. Another pretty display is for each person to let his/her balloon go at the same time and see them all rise up together.

Because most areas will not allow you to release the balloons into the open, an idea that is more environmentally acceptable is to release the balloons inside. The guests may also attach their own personal sayings to the balloons so that later the bride and groom can read the sentiments from their well wishers.

Words of Caution when Ordering Balloon Releases:

not all cities allow releasing of balloons into the atmosphere because some balloons are harmful to the environment

look for alternatives such as recycled balloons

do not take the word of the vendor that you may release the balloons in your city or even in the location you have chosen

Water Balloon Overview

*"Put this book on your 'must-have' list."—School Library Journal, starred review

Marley's life is as precarious as an overfull water balloon—one false move and everything will burst. Her best friends are pulling away from her, and her parents, newly separated, have decided she should spend the summer with her dad, with a job she didn't ask for and doesn't want. On the upside is a cute boy who loves dogs as much as Marley does . . . but young love has lots of opportunity for humiliation and misinterpreted signals. Luckily Marley is a girl who trusts her instincts, making her story funny, heartfelt, and emotionally true.

Water Balloon Specifications

A warm debut novel about friendship and first love, from a popular picture-book author.

Marley’s life is as precarious as an overfull water balloon—one false move and everything will burst. Her best friends are pulling away from her, and her parents, newly separated, have decided she should spend the summer with her dad in his new house, with a job she didn’t ask for and certainly doesn’t want. On the upside is a cute boy who loves dogs as much as Marley does . . . but young love has lots of opportunity for humiliation and misinterpreted signals. Luckily Marley is a girl who trusts her instincts and knows the truth when she sees it, making her an immensely appealing character and her story funny, heartfelt, and emotionally true.

A Note from the Author

Dear Amazon Readers:

Years ago, when I started to write Water Balloon, my first novel, I thought a lot about the books I loved most as a young reader (which are not very different from the books I love most as an adult reader).

In books and movies, I appreciate nothing more than a chance to get to know a character well. The best of them tend to linger—I think about them long after I finish reading.

They may have lived at different times, have different pastimes—like spying on their New York City neighbors or inventing a secret language or learning how to function in the parentless world of boarding school—but at their core, the characters I love best are people I understand and care about, sometimes very deeply.

There are all kinds of writers, and luckily, there are all kinds of readers, too. The books I write will all strive to deliver that kind of character connection. I hope that for some young reader, Marley Baird will be the friend she would wish alive if she could.

Most publishers frown upon books in which nothing happens, so I knew I needed to give Marley some things to do. And she’s juggling a lot: dealing with her parents’ recent separation, surviving an extremely challenging summer job, getting used to living with her father (who always seemed more spectator than parent), and wondering if her forever best friends are leaving her and their childhood traditions behind.

In other words, stuff happens.

My books will never have last-minute helicopter rescue scenes. Or vampires. No magic potions to magically fix everything on the second-to-last page. No explosions, either.

Unless you consider a bursting water balloon to be an explosion. Then, it turns out, I have, in fact, written a book with a number of explosions.

Life is full of surprises. Kind of like the books we love best.

Happy reading.

Alternative Energy-Solar Energy - What Are Solar Balloons?

Alternative Energy-Solar Energy - What Are Solar Balloons?

Last year a unique concept in alternative energy won the "Forward Thinking" award in the RE:VOLT Electrifying Ideas competition. What was this new concept? Solar balloons developed by Israeli scientists Joseph Cory and Dr. Pini Gurfil for Sun Hope.

Alternative Energy-Solar Energy - What Are Solar Balloons?

Alternative Energy-Solar Energy - What Are Solar Balloons?

What are Solar Balloons?

Historically the term "solar balloon" has referred to simple black balloons that were filled with air. According to Wikipedia, "as sunlight shines on the balloon, the air inside is heated and expands, causing an upward buoyancy force, much like an artificially-heated hot air balloon. Some solar balloons are large enough for human flight, but usage is limited to the toy market as the surface-area to payload-weight ratio is rather high."

As technology evolves, terminology evolves as well. Now the title of "solar balloon" can also refer to a balloon like "platform" that contains embedded photovoltaic arrays or solar arrays in order to convert solar energy into electrical energy. In the case of the Joseph Cory and Dr. Pini Gurfil's Sun Hope design we see a lighter-than-air helium filled fabric balloon as the platform or base. Each fabric balloon is tied to the ground with two cables - one for helium refills, the other for passing generated electricity to a control panel.

Sun Hope isn't alone in their quest for a cost effective, functional solar balloon design. Another solar balloon design comes from Cool Earth Solar. Cool Earth Solar uses plastic balloons that are suspended on wires. To get a visual, imagine a 2 meter wide mylar balloon. These plastic balloons also have concentrated solar photovoltaics where light is magnified onto solar cells to maximize electricity generation output. A common concern about solar balloons is their ability to stand up in high wind environments, according to Cool Earth Solar, their system can withstand wind speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

While solar balloons show promise as a photovoltaic implementation there are some concerns to be noted. These concerns however, are no different than those found with medium to large wind power installations. Depending upon the size and location of installation one may have to consider items like air traffic regulations and potential bird collisions.

Solar balloons provide impressive value in isolated, off-grid locations as well as temporary portable power supplies. In situations such as these, solar balloons provide a route to escaping a fossil fuel dependency.

Concentrating Solar Power

In both of examples of solar balloons, the efficiency of the photovoltaic cells are improved by concentrating solar power (CSP). According to the US Department of Energy, "concentrating solar power's relatively low cost and ability to deliver power during periods of peak demand - when and where we need it - mean that it can be a major contributor to the nation's future needs for distributed sources of energy."

Concentrating solar power system work by using mirrors or other reflective surfaces to intensify the energy of the sun to a specific point. This concentration of energy can improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells. According to Cool Earth Solar, "multi-junction, high efficiency cells derived from satellite technology allow CPV systems to generate the same amount of electricity as traditional flat panel PV systems while using up to 500 times less solar cell material." With diminishing supplies of raw materials required to manufacture photovoltaic cells, concentrating solar power can provide more energy with less raw materials.

While today solar balloons are a new technology, in the near future they may be a solution to curing our nation of it's dependence on fossil fuels. The Cool Earth team recently received million which they plan to use to build a 10 megawatt plant using their solar balloon technology. Thanks to forward thinking, environmentally conscious investors, a solar balloon based solar power plant may be a reality in the next few years, someday it may even power your home.

Birthday Balloons - Send a Balloon Bouquet Or Arrangement

Birthday Balloons - Send a Balloon Bouquet Or Arrangement

Birthday balloons make a big impression in any size, shape or color. You may want several dozen helium-filled balloons for a surprise party, or select one or two balloons to accompany a flower arrangement. In either case, buoyant birthday balloons represent a special occasion and always delight the recipient.

Balloon Bouquets

Birthdays balloons are often presented in a "bouquet" of up to 15 balloons and will elicit a "Wow" from guests. They are a combination of mylar (the foil-like balloons) and latex. Typically the mylar balloon has "happy birthday" messaging, while the remaining latex balloons are in solid, complimentary colors.  Having this mixture is not just festive. It looks professionally planned, especially when the colors match the rest of your party decor. Bouquets are usually secured with ribbon at the bottom and start at around dollars.

Balloon Arrangements

If a balloon bouquet isn't the type of statement you're looking for, you can also get one or two mylar birthday balloons as part of a flower arrangement.  In small or large sizes, they're a festive addition to a flower bouquet without taking up as much space. Similarly, you can include a birthday balloon with a chocolate lover's gift basket, stuffed animal or flower cake.

Self-Inflating Balloons

A new innovation is self-inflating balloons.  When transporting a dozen helium-filled balloons isn't feasible, or you don't want to blow them up on your own, you can now send a large mylar balloon that inflates automatically when an envelope or gift box is opened.  It makes a great surprise and includes a base that anchors the balloon while it floats gently on its own.

Where To Find Birthday Balloons

Sites such as FTD.com or 1-800-Balloons.com offer birthday bouquets for any age or theme. Party supply stores tend to have a larger variety of mylar balloons. For example, on a first birthday, you can find mylar number one-shaped balloons. Or for the sports fan's birthday, try mixing balloons from their favorite sport into the bouquet for some extra personalization. Toy stores and card shops will also carry bags of multi-colored latex balloons.

My Red Balloon Overview

The boy has been waiting for this day for many months. It's the day his daddy comes home from overseas. He jumps out of bed and gets ready for the big event. But before going downstairs for breakfast, he takes along something very important: his red balloon. There will be many families and loved ones at the pier. The red balloon will help his father find him among the crowd. When the boy and his mother get to the pier, they find parents waiting for daughters and sons, and children waiting for mommies and daddies. Suddenly, the crowd gives up a rousing cheer as the big ship approaches the harbor. The boy can see sailors standing on the deck. Could one of them be his daddy? But as the ship approaches, the boy loses his grip on the red balloon. Will his daddy find him in the crowd? Eve Bunting's endearing story is lovingly illustrated by Kay Life and captures that special moment when a family is reunited after months of separation.

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery Review

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery Overview

Haven't you ever wondered ...

Where do balloons go
when you let them go free?
It can happen by accident.
It happened to me.

Do they tango with airplanes?
Or cha-cha with birds?
Can plain balloons read
balloons printed with words?

When one little boy accidentally lets go of his balloon, his imagination takes him on its journey.

Jamie Lee Curtis's gentle and humorous exploration of the joys and perils of a balloon's life is whimsically brought to life by Laura Cornell's illustrations. From the best-selling author-illustrator team of Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods that Make My Day comes another delightful mystery about letting go.

Includes cool reusable stickers and two play areas!

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery Specifications

Anyone who has ever let go of a balloon string and watched the bright object go up and up and out of sight will appreciate this whimsical picture book that ponders the age-old question Where Do Balloons Go? This "uplifting mystery"--examined in singsong rhyme by Jamie Lee Curtis and playfully explored with Roz Chast-like illustrations by Laura Cornell--is a new offering from the team behind Today I Feel Silly, When I Was Little, and Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born.

Where do they go
when they float far away?
Do they ever catch cold
and need somewhere to stay?

"Do they tango with airplanes? / Or cha-cha with birds? / Can plain balloons read / balloons printed with words?" Cornell's splashy colorful spreads (one which folds out to four full pages) pop with plenty of witty details. One balloon, for example, waits nervously with a suitcase outside the Bates Motel. In a balloon-ridden urban scenario, advertisements promote balloon-friendly services such as "The Detanglers, professionals since 1934." This exuberant book will have you half-believing that balloons are people, too. A page of vinyl reusable stickers in the back can be used on the sky-and-cloud wash on the front endpaper, or the space-scape (complete with comets) on the back endpaper. Next time your child's balloon drifts away, it'll be much easier for him or her to imagine it dancing in Bolivia than caught up in phone wires! (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Kid Birthday Cake Idea Collection - Cake Decorating Without Fear

The most important kid birthday cake idea is choosing a cake concept which fits with your party theme. You can start with a simple sheet cake topped with small toys or figures, or piece the cake itself to form a unique design.

For example, a Construction Party cake could be topped with tiny toy dumptrucks and bulldozers pushing a chocolate chip mountain. Or, the cake itself could be cut, pieced and frosted to look like a dump truck.

For a Train Party, set a miniature choo-choo train on licorice tracks atop your cake, or line up several brightly colored frosted loaf cakes to form train cars.

For a Luau party, a simple round or sheet cake can be festooned with a silk flower lei, or form a string of cupcakes in a circle and adorn each one with silk or frosting flowers. Connect with a licorice string to make a cupcake "lei".

Baking cakes in an oven-safe glass bowl or in a special 3D sports ball pan is great for making any kind of perfectly round ball cake, or the dress part of a Barbie doll cake. A wonder mold cake pan makes small single serving doll cakes and other cute creations!

Think of the design you'd like to make and what shapes you need to make it - round, sheet, loaf, cupcakes, or a combination.

Peruse cake decorating books for a kid birthday cake idea which fits your needs. Many books provide templates forcutting and piecing cakes to create any number of popular designs. You decide just how simple or challenging your cake will be.

For a no-fuss kid birthday cake idea, apply an edible cake art image to the top of a frosted cake. Many popular themes and copyrighted images such as Disney are available to provide a professional looking cake design.

Themed cake pans are another popular cake decorating option. They provide the shape and visual design to follow for an impressive finished cake. Popular TV and cartoons characters are well represented in cake pans, as well as teddy bears, butterflies, pirates, Tigger,Mickey Mouse, and lots more.

FROSTING CHOICES

Homemade Frosting - Dig up that famous family recipe or check out one of the many online recipe sites and make your cake frosting from scratch. Be sure to plan ahead how much of each color will be needed for both basic foundation and decorative trim.

Canned and Tube Frostings - Easiest and quickest, prepared canned frostings are available in grocery stores in the baking aisle with the cake mixes. They generally come in white, chocolate, and a handful of other popular flavors. Keep a few ready-to-use tube frostings on hand in various basic colors to add the finishing touches.

Fondant Frosting - Gaining in popularity in this country in recent years, fondant frosting gives a beautiful smooth finish to your cake decorating creation. Fondant can be rolled out and draped over a cake, poured on as a glaze, or sculpted into shapes. It is easily tinted, and can be flavored as well. Ready-made fondant is available through party supply outlets. There are also many recipes online for homemade fondant.

CAKE DECORATING WITH CANDY AND SMALL TOYS

Cookies, candies, and other materials can be used for special and impressive effects. Frosted sugar cones can serve as the fins on a space ship cake or the turrets on a castle cake. Make a surprise cake filling with jello.

A wide variety of plastic stand-ups or cake toppers are available in craft stores. Or, simply use a toy which fits in with the party theme as a cake topper and give it to the party child when the party is over. Action figures, small dolls, animals and cartoon characters all make good choices.

Add cool candy accents with M & M's, licorice pieces, licorice whips, animal crackers, oreo cookies, paper umbrellas, pretzel sticks, tootsie rolls, jimmies, gummies such as worms, bears, etc, gumdrops, mini marshmallows, colored coconut, jellybeans.

THE LATEST CAKE DECORATING FADS!

There are many novel choices for placing the finishing touches on your party cake. Dress it up in style with one or more of these unique special effects:

Spray Color Mist - is a fun addition to your baking repertoire. Frost your cake white, then spray on edible color from an aerosol can. Available in many colors, it can be used with stencils to make unique designs, as a highlight to whipped topping - even on your child's mashed potatoes!

Luster Dusts - are an edible food safe "dust" which can be used on any frosting recipe that dries hard and firm to the touch. Brush it on white frosting for a metallic-like glossy sheen or layer it for interesting color effects.

Cake Stampers - can be used along with brush-on color for fondant icing. Simply stamp shapes and designs into the finished fondant and tint with brush-on color.

Cake Stencils - Place stencil on iced cake and sprinkle edible glitter, confetti sprinkles, or use spray-on color mist.

Edible Color Markers - These unique markers are used just like an ink marker. Draw fun designs on cakes, cookies, fondant frosting, even cheese, fruit slices and bread. Decorating marker kits are available for children.

Edible sugar-shape decorations,
decorative candles, themed cake picks and rings, and edible glitter
are all fun tools in your cake baking arsenal.

Now you're armed with lots of great ideas for cake decorating success - without fear!

Go forth and create... and above all, have fun!

Cloudbuster
A 5.5 foot chloroprene balloon better known as a Cloudbuster - can last from 2 to 8 days If you would like to extend the life of your Cloudbuster, bring it down and tie it off close to the ground at night, re-launch in the morning. The air pressure does affect your balloon. While the manufacturer does not suggest that this balloon is re-usable, it has been done successfully.

Baloons

Cloudbusters, Skybusters or Giant Reusable Balloons?

Skybuster
A Skybuster can be either a chloroprene balloon or a latex balloon. 6 foot giant latex balloons usually float from 1 to 3 days (if hi-float was used). Hi-float is a liquid that you put in latex balloons to lengthen their float time. It coats the pores inside the balloon. Hi-float is not to be used with a chloroprene or re-usable.
Reusable balloons

Cloudbusters, Skybusters or Giant Reusable Balloons?

The 6 foot reusable shiny balloon can be made with one, two or three colors with the most common being red, blue and red, white and blue (looks like a beach ball). Also, you can add your logo - however, if this balloon is in the air 100' - your logo might not be noticed. The concept of this balloon is to fill it once and top it off with helium daily. You will also want to tie this balloon off close to the ground at night. The reusable balloon can last up to 6 months and comes with a small repair kit. Trees, power lines and any obstructions can tear the balloon.

So, what's right for you?
I'd suggest you look at your helium and balloon invoices, then consider how many times per week you fly your balloons. More frequently - I'd suggest a reusable balloon. For less frequent use, I'd go with the Cloudbuster.
